Celebrating a painter and his territory
Tales and Woods and the Rubiana Gallery
Following the honorary citizenship granted to him by the Municipality of Rubiana in 2016, Francesco Tabusso initiated the establishment of a Municipal Gallery, with the intention of developing, through the narrative and enchantment of painting, love and knowledge of nature and art.
He thus donated one of his paintings to the village in the Susa valley where he had spent the years of his childhood and many seasons of his life. Established in 2007 by Master Tabusso – following his appointment as honorary citizen by the Rubiana Administration the previous year – the "Tales and Woods" painting workshop was designed for fifth-year pupils of the Giuseppe Simone Girodo primary school.
The painting workshop continued its activities annually according to the method just described until 2010, when the Master's health conditions progressively worsened. With the disappearance of its creator on January 29, 2012, the "Tales and Woods" event moved to a biennial format, preserving the original core of the artistic workshop, thanks to the support of painter Renata Ferrari.
In 2016 the event was substantially renewed: on the one hand, the possibility of participating in the painting workshop was extended to third and fourth grade pupils; on the other, attention focused on Master Tabusso and the role he occupied in contemporary painting, both national and Piedmontese.
From here originated the retrospectives focused on the themes, techniques and various aspects of his art: in 2016, the one on the Master's collaboration with the most important writers of the second Italian twentieth century (Calvino, Soldati, Rigoni Stern...); in 2018 the deep bond established by Tabusso with the Susa valley, and with that of the Messa stream in particular, was emphasized; in 2020 instead the first collective retrospective was realized based on the Master and the artists (Aimone, Ruggeri, Casorati, Chessa, Soffiantino, Saroni, Campagnoli...) who had taken their first steps together with him in the world of art in Turin in the 1950s.
